Welcome

Welcome to ZTERM 2000, the full feature AMOS/Unix terminal emulator written for 32-bit Windows operating systems.

Specifically Changed in this Build

Build 144 changes:

• Corrected problem with the color mapping dialog that caused the colors to get drawn in the wrong place on systems with non-default metrics (size of window captions, dialog text - that type of thing).
• Added ESC e * and ESC e ( sequences to the AM65/AM75 emulators - these select between 24 and 42 line mode.
• Fixed problems with GDI printing.
• Corrected minor display problems with the bottom status line that were introduced as a result of the variable row code added in build 143.
• Added option in the profile list's "Application Options" to cause the profile list to be re-displayed when the ZTERM emulation window closes.
• Corrected a CY-350 problem that caused yellow text to get drawn incorrectly.

Build 143a changes:

• Corrected an internal build problem with 143 - this caused the ZTERM to attempt to load the debug version of Microsoft's standard library. This would result in a message about 'msvcrtd.dll' not being able to load on some systems.

Build 143 changes:

• Corrected problem with telnet port getting reset to 23.
• Fixed a small buffering problem on the top status line of AM6x emulators.
• Corrected a problem with opening SSH connections to hosts that didn't reply.
• Added mouse tracking support to the VT100 and ANSI emulators. This is compatible with the x-term implementation. See the on-line help for information.
• Corrected a printer passthrough problem with VT100 and ANSI emulators.
• Corrected a problem where a shortcut to a global profile would not launch the global profile, but instead create a local profile with the same name.
• You can now use the keyboard to perform copy and paste functions. To copy, press Shift+Ctrl+C and for paste, Ctrl+Shift+V.
• Added the ability to specify parameters in the Open/Print file escape sequence. Please see the on-line help for documentation.
• The following escape sequences now support embedded environment variables: File Transfer, Execute Program or Batch File, Execute or Print Windows File, and Set Hyperlinks. Embedded environment variables are strings surrounded by the percent sign that get translated to the value of a Windows environment variable. For example, "%TEMP%\test.txt" would get translated to "I:\TEMP\test.txt" -- assuming that the environment variable TEMP is set to I:\TEMP, of course.
• The printer disable option has now been moved to the printer tab and we've changed it's meaning. It's now possible to disable printer-passthrough mode and/or the print screen function.
• ZTERM now supports variable row counts for all the emulators. As a result, the VT10024 and ANSI24 emulators have gone away - if you launch a profile with one of these emulators, ZTERM will switch it to the regular emulator and setup the row count correctly. The row count is on the Terminal Emulator tab in Configuration.

Build 142a changes:

• Finally corrected the ZTERM identification stuff. Test before you release, Rod!
• FTP username and password are now saved when using the profile wizard.

Build 142 changes:

• Corrected a problem with National Replacement Character sets on the top and bottom status lines in the AM62x and AM65x emulators.
• Changed ZTERM to not negotiate local echo with telnet servers. More often than not, this would cause more confusion than usefulness.
• Corrected a bug in the ZTERM identification of AM6x emulations. Sorry about that folks.
• Added a Smart Mouse option to treat single clicks as double clicks.

Build 141 changes:

• More ANSI/VT100 emulation bug fixes.
• When negotiating terminal type with telnet hosts, the emulation type is now sent as lower case.
• Ctrl+Space now sends a NULL character in the ANSI/VT100 emulators now.
• Corrected double-click function in Smart Mouse where incorrect characters got sent to the host.
• If printing is disabled, Print Screen is also now disabled.
• The ESC CHR(12) (Execute/Print file) and ESC CHR(22) (WinExec) functions now support strings up to 512 bytes - before, the limit was 100 bytes.
• Added Hyperlink capabilities. This allows developers to setup areas of the screen that display with italic and underlined text and when double clicked launch the file or URL specified. See the on-line help in the developer's section for details.
• Corrected the minimize to tray function to work with bitmap fonts - previously, it only worked when using TrueType fonts.
• When ZTERM is minimized to the tray, the tooltip for the ZTERM icon now shows the connection name - useful if you minimize more than one ZTERM session.
• The ESC ? sequence (used to get cursor position and determine if ZTERM is the terminal emulator) now works in all emulations - previously, the ANSI/VT100 terminals didn't support this sequence.
• Corrected a registration problem on Windows XP where the user didn't have admin rights.
• Added a new option - Force CAPS on. With this enabled, when ZTERM gets keyboard focus, Caps lock is turned on. Likewise, when you switch back to another application, the Caps lock is restored to its previous state. This is useful when all the typing you do on the host is in upper case.

Build 140 changes:

• Corrected serial operation with Belkin USB to serial adapters.
• Fixed default ANSI/VT100 function key sequences for F5 through F12.
• Lots of compatibility bug fixes to the ANSI/VT100 emulators.
• Added an option to default FTP connections to binary mode.
• Made file transfer error messages clearer when problems prevent opening the PC side file.

Build 139 changes:

• New developer escape sequence to copy parts of the emulator display to the Windows clipboard. Please see the Developer Information section in the on-line help for more information.
• Added a display option to minimize ZTERM to the tray (next to the clock on the taskbar). Useful if you want to keep ZTERM running but not take space up on the taskbar.
• Added a printer option to warn the user if ZTERM is being shutdown and the LPD service is running.
• Corrected the ANSI and VT100 emulators to pass through escape sequences correctly when printing.
• Removed the restriction on running ZTERM on a terminal server. In the past, ZTERM required a dongle if terminal services were installed, but since Windows XP has this feature, it makes sense to remove it. Please note however that if you plan to install ZTERM on a terminal server with the intention of running it from thin-client devices, you must obtain the appropriate number of user licenses.

Build 138 changes:

• Many bug fixes for modem dialing. No more crashing when multiple dialing locations are defined in Windows and ZTERM's window doesn't disapear for a few seconds when you hit the dial button.
• Answerback capability for VT100 and ANSI terminals
• There's a new option in Configuration/Options - Wakeup screen on RX. If this is enabled, the system has a screen saver running and data is received from the host, the screen saver will be terminated. Obviously, this option might prevent Windows from turning off the monitor to save power, so please use wisely!
• Lots of bug fixes to ZTERM to AMOS file transfers over serial using the ZTXFER program. Make sure you update your host's ZTXFER.LIT from the PC so that it's version 2.0(211). More reliable transfers, better error recovery for noisy modem lines, better statistics and transfer status, more reliable aborting are just some of the improvements made to serial transfers.

Build 137 changes:

• Bug fixes for modems on the Profile Wizard. Fixed a bug in the Windows CE version and broke the desktop version - sorry!
• Bug fix for automatic full-screen mode.

Build 136 changes:

• Corrected a problem with the ANSI/VT100 erase line command
• The Profile Wizard now automatically selects the Courier New font as the default True-Type font
• Upload file capability added - allows a file to be sent to the host as-is; the opposite of Log to File
• Fixed a bug that would cause ZTERM to switch in and out of full-screen mode if the Print Screen function was used and the user then pressed Enter
• Automatic Form-Feed option added to ZTERM's LPD server
• The dot-matrix emulator used for passthrough printing now accepts two escape sequences: ESC U to switch to an underlined font and ESC N to switch back to normal
• Initial AM65 and AM75 emulations - if you use either of these terminals, please let us know how these work out
• Bug fix for the ANSI and VT100 terminals - blinking text now works correctly

Build 135 changes:

• Corrected a problem where switching to full-screen mode in bitmap font and exiting ZTERM would sometimes leave the screen in the wrong resolution
• Added the ability to add a password that's used to validate connections to the host. Useful for a laptop that dials into a host computer - if the laptop gets stolen, the user can't connect without the password.
• Corrected a problem with right-clicking in the profile selection sheet.
• Corrected a problem in the profile editor where the keyboard accelerators (such as Ctrl+C for Copy) wouldn't work.
• There are now two types of profiles - user and global. If you have administrative rights, you'll be able to create and edit global profiles. These global profiles will be displayed for all regular system users, however, no changes can be made by these users. This is very useful for NT/2000 systems that are shared by multiple users wishing to run ZTERM - the profile only needs to be setup once for the system.
• Improvements to the modem dialer - should now work correctly with software-based modems.
• ZTERM now supports the SSH protocol in addition to Telnet. ZTERM uses a modified version of the TTSSH utility to implement the SSH connection. It supports:
  • Compatible with SSH protocol version 1.5
  • Ciphers: 3DES, Blowfish, DES
  • Server authentication using the ssh_known_hosts database (including the option of adding a server's key to the database)
  • Authentication using password, RSA, rhosts, rhosts+RSA, TIS challenge/response
  • Compression support
  • Connection forwarding, including full support for X connection forwarding

Build 134a changes:

• Corrected problem with telnet into BSD and FreeBSD machines

Build 134 changes:

• Corrected a problem reading the instance limit (and a few other variables) when ZTERM was being run on NT 4 or Windows 2000 and the user didn't have administrative rights.
• Corrected a display problem on Windows NT 4.0.
• Made the ZTXFER /A switch work in both directions - you can now append to a file on the PC. You have to update ZTXFER.LIT on your AMOS machine to make this work.

Build 133 changes:

• The :< > and *< > options from the startup commands can now also be programmed into user buttons. This way, you can make macros with the user buttons and have the resulting string change in response to user input.
• For the user buttons, a new tag has been added - !<number>. It tells the user button processor to send another user button after the current button completes. For example, this sequence will prompt the user for the IP address, merge with the text to send to the host and then process user button number 2:

• Bug fix in PhotoFile: If PhotoFile isn't licensed properly because no security key is install and you enquire about PhotoFile licensing, PhotoFile now sends a carriage-return rather than sending nothing.
• PhotoFile addition: The Scan from File feature has two new switches - /w1 and /w2 to setup the 80 and 132 column widths.

Build 132 changes:

• ZTERM now plays much nicer with telnet URL links from web browsers - telnet://tabbs.alphamicro.com for example. When ZTERM is installed, it will offer to set ZTERM as the system's default telnet client and when it encounters a hostname on the command line will automatically create a profile for that host.
• ZTERM windows created by the profile wizard are now a little larger when initially created - in the past, they started up too small.
• The profile editor now shows non-standard telnet port numbers as part of the hostname
• A new option "Backspace as back-arrow" has been added. In this mode, the backspace key will send the same character as the back-arrow key and the Delete key will send the delete character. This is useful for hosts that don't support the delete character and expect to get a backspace character.
• Added a global option that allows telnet connections of any type to be disabled. Useful if you want to force profiles onto the serial port.
• Pressing the "Print Scrn" key now performs a print-screen in ZTERM.
• The FTP server port can now be changed.
• Added back the default 250ms of delay when sending startup commands. This used to be the way ZTERM worked until build 131b - the delay in the startup configuration is additional to this delay.
• Corrected a problem that could cause an error message box when changing to the ".." directory in the FTP client when the FTP server said the change directory was OK.
• If mouse reporting is enabled, holding down the Ctrl key and right clicking on the emulation window now correctly displays the pop-up menu. This previously worked for copy/paste operations and now works for this option.

Build 131b changes:

• Changes to the way startup commands are sent. This should correct a very rare problem where ZTERM wouldn't send startup commands.

Build 131a changes:

• Small bugfix for the CoStar interface.
• Corrected a problem with the AMOS ACCEPT subroutine (it outputs extra ESC characters and these could confuse ZTERM).
• Re-built using Intel's C compiler - if you notice an increase/decrease in speed, please let me know.

Build 131 changes:

• Added scrollback option. When enabled, about 100 lines of the display that got scrolled off the screen can be shown by moving the vertical scrollbar that'll appear next to the emulation window. Look at Configuration/Display.
• Changed the font missing dialog so that it could be turned off. You might want to delete the ZTERM fonts if you use other TrueType fonts and this can prevent error messages each time you start ZTERM.
• Changed the print-screen function so that it doesn't force the output printer into landscape mode. If you want to print 132 column output you MUST set landscape mode manually before performing a print screen.
• Added serial passthrough mode - this allows you to hook up a serial device to your PC and then communicate with it from the host using a telnet session. See the Developer's section of the help file for more details.
• Moved the readme file (this file) to HTML format.

Build 130a changes:

• Corrected bug with color mapping on low-intensity AM62C colors.
• Fixed crash when trying to screen print.

Build 130 changes:

• Added Page Up and Page Down buttons to the Special keys toolbar.
• Corrected problem with ZTXFER.LIT upload.
• Corrected a problem with the write to status bar escape sequence - the connect timer was overwriting this.
• Corrected a problem that caused the connect/disconnect button on the toolbar to get corrupted on Windows 2000.
• Added ability to remap display colors to any color when using a color emulator such as the AM62C or ANSI emulations. This replaces (and enhances) the older "Brighten Low Intensity" option since you can map to any color.

Build 129 changes:

• New custom escape sequence. ESC ESC CHR(7) works like the regular bell character, CHR(7), but will only ring the bell (and blink if that option is enabled) if the ZTERM window doesn't have focus. This is useful when performing lengthy tasks on the host. If ZTERM doesn't have focus, when processing is complete the host will get the user's attention but conversely if ZTERM is in focus, the user won't get confused by bell sounds.
• Improvements to Dial-Up Networking support. Status now is displayed and there is a cancel button to abort the connection.
• Corrected a problem with the Reset Terminal option that left printer passthrough mode active.
• Removed the brighten low intensity option since the low intensity color can now be set to any color on monochrome emulators.
• Corrected Wyse 350 attribute problem with blink/underline/dim and blink/dim underline/reverse modes.
• Added option to the CHR$(27) CHR$(24) sequence. If the filename is prefixed with ! ZTERM will create the spool file as usual, but won't display a dialog to tell the user the printer log is done.

Build 128 changes:

• Corrected problems with moving around remote folders when browsing a non-AMOS FTP server.
• Corrected problem with registration codes being taken and later rejected. There's no need to encode the ZTERM install.
• The FTP server browser now remembers if it was in list or report mode.
• Fixes in the sorting code when the FTP server browser columns get clicked in report mode.
• Added option to allow between normal and bold TrueType fonts.
• Added ability to select append and contiguous modes for ZTXFER PC to host transfers from the file transfer dialog.
• Totally changed the operation of the screen cache. Take a look at the developer information in the on-line help for more info.
• Added a connection timer to the status bar.
• Added auditing capabilities. This is turned on in the profile display using Application Options. It logs connect, disconnect, safe warning and configuration events to a tab delimited file. Auditing supports a single file in a shared folder. You must have Microsoft's Client for Microsoft Networking" installed in order to use this feature.
• Corrected a crash that would occur if startup commands were prompting for data, the telnet connection closed and the "auto close on telnet close" option was set.
• Corrected a bug that would sometimes cause the cursor to get hidden when using AShell's version of VUE.
• Corrected migration of settings from ZTERM 1.2 - modem connections still require that the port get reset manually, but all other settings now migrate correctly.

NOTE: In build 128, the help file is still not completed. Once the all the bugs are gone, another release will update the help.

Build 127 changes:

• Corrected a crash when using the profile's "International" tab in the profile configuration list.
• Added an option to the Profile wizard's modem page that allows the user to select if country and area codes are used.
• Corrected a problem with TAPI on Windows 95 that caused modems to not be listed.
• Added another escape sequence - ESC ESC CHR(2). Identical to the ESC ESC CHR(1) function but also sends a carriage return to the host after the clipboard contents.

Build 126 changes:

• Added new escape sequence (ESC ESC CHR(1)) to the emulators to send the clipboard contents to the host.
• Corrections to the registration function.

Build 125 changes:

• Added to the :<message> startup commands with a password option. Using *<message> will result in a password input field in the startup dialog. Other than that, this startup command works exactly the same as :<message>
• New application help system expanded to 30 items and generally cleaned up.
• New option (Display tab in Configuration) to automatically hide the toolbar when in full-screen mode. To show the toolbar again, just move the cursor towards the top of the screen and it will pop back up.
• Updated the help file (not yet complete).
• Added Co-Star escape sequence processing to all emulators.
• Bug fixes relating to TAPI modems.
• Name change to "ZTERM 2000"

Build 124 changes (build 124 was not a public release):

• ZTERM 2.0 can now be installed - the beta timeout has been removed and now you get a 28 day evaluation period. Additionally, there's a new code generation program for dongle users - each license in the dongle will be converted to two credits when you switch to the new program. Upgrades from ZTERM 1.2 cost 50% of the full license price and therefore use one credit - full installs take two credits.
• A new escape sequence that allows you to specify the FTP username/password for the next FTP transfer. After that transfer, the username/password reverts back to the username/password stored in the current profile's configuration. The code below shows how to setup this feature in BASIC:

• Improvements to the startup command processor. You can now send escape sequences by prefixing characters with a caret - for example, to send escape, one would use ^[. You can also send extended 8-bit characters by using providing the three digital decimal value of the character to send. For example, to send a DEL, one would type ^0127.
• The "<password>" feature in the startup commands has been replaced with a more powerful option. Inserting a :<message> string into the startup commands will prompt the user with the text inside the brackets and will then replace the entire sequence with the string the user enters. For example:

• Added the ability to import and export profiles. With this option, you can setup a ZTERM profile, export it to a common shared folder and then use the exported file to clone the profile onto other machines.
• Added support for X-Modem, Y-Modem and variants
• Moved the instance limit to the profile editor - i.e. instance limits are now global across all profiles.
• The number of serial ports available in ZTERM is now the same as available in the system - if you've got 8 COM ports on your system, ZTERM can now talk to all of them directly or using the TAPI modem configurations also in your system.
  

Build 123 changes:

• Beta expiration moved to the end of February 2000
• Simple menu option has had clipboard and print screen functions removed. To make an uneditable connection with ZTERM, just make a desktop shortcut to the profile that has simple menu turned on and then delete the regular ZTERM shortcut. This will prevent the configuration editor dialog from appearing.

Build 122 changes:

• Bug fixes in the VT and ANSI emulators
• Log to Clipboard option added

Build 121 changes:

• Added a new tab to the Configuration that allows the hostnames and phone number to be changed when the profile is being edited.
• Added 115,200 baud to profile wizard.
• Corrected low intensity color problem when disconnected on the mono emulators.
• Added option to Idle Disconnect to prevent disconnects when the safe screen isn't matched.
• Corrected a problem with doing serial file transfers to/from an Alpha when the file was zero bytes in length. Make sure you update ZTXFER.LIT on AMOS.
• TAPI is now supported! COM1-4 direct still exist, but now the modems listed are listed based upon the modems setup in Windows. As a result, you'll have to reset any modem profiles.
• Corrected some minor profile wizard problems related to next/back order.

Build 120 changes:

• Corrected a problem that greyed-out the Maximize button.
• In the AM62x and Wyse based emulators, escape sequences can now be sent through to the printer when using tranparent print mode.
• Corrected a scrolling region problem with VT100 and ANSI emulators.
• Monochrome emulators now have a new item on the right-click pop-up menu that allows quick selection of the emulation colors.
• All mono emulators (AM62A, VT100 and Wyse 50) now allow selection of a seperate color for low-intensity mode.
• Corrected an issue with Wyse-based emulators and protected characters.
• Corrected a problem where uploading ZTXFER.LIT would result in an incorrect hash total being displayed.
• Added an idle disconnect mode. If enabled, after a specified number of minutes with no keyboard activity or data from the host, ZTERM can automatically disconnect the connection to the host.
• Improved the "Settings/Reset Terminal" option.
• Added a TTY emulator. It only undertstands line-feed, carriage return and bell. This emulator is useful for capturing data such as escape sequences when you don't want the escape sequences altered in any way

Build 119 changes:

• New Window" option now launches the profile configurator. The old profile selection window is now removed.
• Fixed bug with the FTP sequence in the Wyse terminal drivers (WY50, WY350, CY350).
• Corrected a problem where the last page in printer passthrough mode would get lost.
• A new version of ZTXFER.LIT is included that's compatible with Multi.
• Added debug option to serial transfers from AMOS machines. If you're having problems with serial transfer, turn on this option and use the /D switch with ZTXFER 2.0(208) or later. Files called "ztxfer.lst" will be created on both systems - these should then be emailed to [email protected] along with guidelines to reproduce the problem.
• ZTERM won't close if the file transfer dialog is open. This is to prevent ZTERM from accidentally being closed while a file transfer is in progress.
• Beta releases now work on Citrix and Windows NT Terminal Server without a dongle.
• Fixed a nasty problem in the Profile Wizard that no doubt caused all kinds of strange problems.
• Corrected a serial transfer problem that caused the ZTXFER program to not terminate correctly if copying from a device like an empty floppy drive.
• All ZTERM configuration data is moved to the registry. This lifts the restriction of the number of profiles that had plauged ZTERM 1.2.

Build 118 changes:

• If the startup command contains the word <password> (case sensitive), ZTERM will prompt for a password and subsitute it for this tag. This is useful when you have a startup command that logs you onto the system, but you still want to enter the password each time, rather than store it on the PC.
• Border redrawing code changed - this prevents the window from flickering so much when the ZTERM window is resized.
• Added the Profile Configurator - now when ZTERM is launched without anything on the command line, the Profile Configurator is started. To make a shortcut to a specific profile, click on the profile and then click Action, Desktop Shortcut.

Build 117 changes:

• Euro symbol is now supported in 8-bit mode with character 164. Currently you must use a TrueType font - bitmap fonts will be supported in future builds.
• Corrected a bug in the FTP client that caused a bomb if ZTERM connected to an FTP server that had a long welcome banner.
• Reduced memory usage when switching between 80 and 132 columns.

These first notes represent changes from ZTERM 1.2.115a:

• TrueType is now fully supported, including graphics. Use the Display tab from Configuration to change the font type.
• ZTERM negotiates the terminal type correctly with Linux systems.
• Printing the screen with Scale to Black and White now does the scaling more accurately - foreground color is now forced to black and background to white (except for reverse video of course). In prior versions, grayscales were printed on some printers.
• The Profile Wizard now disables emulators that have been removed from the system.
• All function keys can now be user defined via a new dialog
• A new configuration dialog "Display" has been created. It controls display mode and also allows setup of the font used (the font dialog has been removed)
• New application help system (see below for details)
• New option to not fold FTP names that have been entered manually. This option results in only wildcard names being folded
• Font selection is now available in the Profile Wizard
• "New Line" option now saved

Distribution

ZTERM 2000 is "shareware" software, which I personally feel is better described as "tryware". The idea is that you download ZTERM 2000 and try it out. You may run ZTERM 2000 with an evaluation license for 28-days. After the 28th day, ZTERM 2000 must be licensed or uninstalled.

If you like ZTERM 2000, we recommend you register it before the 28 day deadline. Once the 28 day limit has been reached, ZTERM 2000 will no longer run. To register manually, choose "Help..." then "Register...".

If you wish to license more than 20 copies of ZTERM, you will be sent a dongle (PC security device) that connects to the parallel port on a Windows PC. With the software available from the COOL.STF website, you can then generate licenses yourself, up to the number purchased. Once the dongle has been "used", it must be returned to your distributor so that it can be "re-filled".

Installation

Just download and run the appropriate ZTERM 2000 installer. ZTERM 2000 will be automatically installed for you. Choose the file that matches you operating system.
